About 6 Rocks with Melting Sun

This minimalist abstract painting of a landscape was made by a Canadian artist.

For Aron Hill nature, in form and color, provides a constant source of inspiration. The Calgary-based artist is known for their creative use of simple bold form and a vivid color palette to re-imagine the traditional landscape. As in many of their works, the sun and rocks figure prominently as ‘figurative’ shapes. The sun is viewed by the artist as a guiding light; the rocks as monuments that anchor the work. In this piece, six black rocks appear stacked in the center of the picture framed by organic shapes in forest green and tomato red. The sun hangs in the sky underscored by a white line. The backdrop is neutral which allows the colors to pop. Hill notes that both Henri Matisse, a masterful 20th-century French artist, and Canada’s modernist Jack Bush were among their artistic influences.

“Whether you like Matisse or not, the interest in pure colour I’ve always been fascinated by and drawn to. The idea of pureness in terms of colour and shape and that hard edge has always appealed to me.” Aron Hill

Aron Hill obtained a BFA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Alberta College of Art and Design and an MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2006. They have exhibited across Canada and in Dubai. Hill’s work is held in private and corporate collections.
