About Two Mothers

This abstract minimalist acrylic painting is by a Canadian artist.

Aron Hill is a respected contemporary artist who lives in Alberta. Their abstract compositions are bold in form with crisp, clean lines often painted in vivid colours. In this dramatic piece, two human-like figures appear on either side of the canvas—the pared-down forms representing two mothers. A bright red sun, a favoured image symbolic of a guiding light hangs between them.
This painting in acrylic and ink is designed to honour the caregivers who look after Hill’s daughter—one biological mother and one foster mother.
The simple, graphic form is reminiscent of one of Hill’s early artistic influences—Marion Nicoll, a renowned 20th-century abstract expressionist painter from Alberta. Hill’s colour palette is restrained—black, grey, tan, and navy save for the pop of red.

“It (This painting) was inspired also by the works of Marion Nicoll who I have been very influenced by, particularly the works in her ritual series.” Aron Hill

Aron Hill obtained a BFA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Alberta College of Art and Design and an MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2006. They have exhibited across Canada and in Dubai. Hill’s work is held in private and corporate collections.
