About Canadian Tire 2/4

This pop art acrylic painting of a ‘Canadian’ tire is by Charles Pachter.

Canada’s much-celebrated pop artist, Charles Pachter displays his signatory humour in this patriotic rendition of a car tire. Canadian Tire is a national hardware store in Canada originally founded by two Toronto brothers in the 1920s. Many Canadian kids including Pachter accompanied their parents to this store for everything from hockey skates to paint and car parts. Pachter’s tire is particularly patriotic as the treads are tiny red maple leaves, a witty nod to the national flag.

“I’m not trying to be malevolent. It’s all just affectionate mischief.” Charles Pachter

“Pachter invades Pop culture with surreal wit. He sometimes paints as an insider to culture and at others like a true outcast. His work escapes a tendency towards intellectualism through the sheer power of talent and love of image.”
David MacLean, Vancouver Sun
