For Canadian pop artist Charles Pachter, the barn is one of three beloved images that symbolize his national pride. This vibrant red barn with its classic, clean lines stands out against the backdrop of a brilliant blue sky and contrasts with the swatch of a green field in the foreground. The optical illusion of the painted frame on the canvas itself adds even more depth to the scene.
Pachter has embraced the image of the barn as a reminder of Canada’s early rural history; a nod to the strength and industriousness of the farming communities that helped shape his country. The Toronto-based artist’s work is often compared to famous painters David Hockney, Andy Warhol and Jim Dine. Charles Pachter’s charming imagery however, is distinctly his own.

Charles Pachter studied at the University of Toronto, the Sorbonne in Paris, and at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in the USA. Among his many accolades, he is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a member of the Order of Ontario, a Chevalier of France’s Order of Arts and Letters, and a recipient of the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in Europe, Japan, the UK, India, and Bangladesh.
