About Mor Figh

During an artist’s residency in Scotland in 2016, glass sculptor Cheryl Wilson-Smith discovered her ancestral roots. The rugged landscape reminded her of the ancient forests and rocky outcrops that surround her northern Ontario home. These uniquely beautiful wall hangings created by layering fine squares of white glass frit (ground glass) pay homage to that heritage and the land she loves. ‘Mor’ means large or great in Gaelic and ‘Figh’ means weave—an apt description for the woven appearance of this work.

She was the 2014 winner of the RBC Award for Glass through the Canadian Clay and Glass. Wilson-Smith has received nine grants from the Ontario Arts Council and one from the Canada Council. Commissions include the Red Lake District Heritage Centre, Margaret Cochenor Memorial Hospital Donor wall. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada, in the UK and the US.
