About Rising Trio

Paper-thin layers of deep red glass frit (special ground glass) are carefully stacked in these striking columns created by Canadian artist Cheryl Wilson-Smith.
The measurements of each column are all 12 inches in width and depth and vary from 70, 75 and 80 inches in height.

Wilson-Smith lives in a remote part of northern Ontario ‘where the highway ends’ surrounded by ancient rock and the boreal forest. Her work reflects her abiding love of and respect for the natural world.

“The wilderness has always been a place of sanctuary for me. The rocks, lakes and trees were here before me and will be here long after which fuels my geological wonder at the passage of time.” Cheryl Wilson-Smith

She was the 2014 winner of the RBC Award for Glass through the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery that published a description of her work: “Created by translating drawings into countless individual layers of glass frit, her sculptures push the limits of glass while interpreting the northern Ontario light, landscape and wilderness.” Wilson-Smith has received nine grants from the Ontario Arts Council and one from the Canada Council. Commissions include the Red Lake District Heritage Centre, Margaret Cochenor Memorial Hospital Donor wall. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada, in the UK and the US.
