About Sophist AP
Large metal letters, welded together into the form of an abstracted head are cast in bronze in this enigmatic work by sculptor Dale Dunning. The title of the work 'Sophist' may refer to a teacher of philosophy and rhetoric from ancient Greece or in popular culture to a person who reasons creatively. The work sits on a metal base and is AP, Artist's Proof."The head that I employ in most of my work is generic…I look on them as a mirror which reflects back the observer’s experience in new combinations and associations." ~ Dale Dunning
Dunning holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. While earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Mt. Alison University, he studied under Lawren P. Harris (son of Group of Seven member Lawren S. Harris) and George Tiessen. Dunning has exhibited across Canada and his work is held in private, corporate and public collections including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, McIntosh Gallery at Western University, Carleton University Art Collection, and the National Library of Canada.
