About Around the Corner
Vancouver-based artist Fiona Ackerman has exhibited her masterfully rendered paintings internationally. Known for her refined sense of colour, and her imaginative and dynamic form, Around the Corner is one of a series of abstract paintings called Paper Trail she created in 2024. Ackerman is playing with blurring the line between abstraction and realism in this piece, a conversation she has broached in much of her work. In one corner, the image appears paper-like as if a page is being turned. The overall effect of this image invites the viewer in. The colour palette is a striking wash of deep red that pops against the passages of white and soft gray.“This painting plays with antagonism between loose gestural painting, hard-edge painting, colour, monochrome, foreground and background. Working on this series, I became aware of the short walk back and forth from home to the studio, a repetitive journey that is somehow never the same. With each trip to the studio, painting is greeted with a fresh start.” Fiona Ackerman
