Biography

“I love painting…. It helps me make sense of the world. It’s a form of meditation in a way that constructs fictional space, that allows things to be poeticized.” -Gary Evans

Canadian artist Gary Evans has pursued his love of painting and his own visual narrative for more than two decades. His work has been described as an abstraction rooted in realism. He often uses both genres in the same painting. Evans says that he likes to ‘create collisions of shape and colour to make things interesting’—to offer a unique perspective. Ultimately, he hopes his work resonates with viewers and provides a positive experience.

Gary Evans was born in England and grew up in the psychedelia of the sixties and early seventies. He says that living in that imaginative time period and memories of the deep history of the English landscape remain an integral part of his imagery. His family moved to Canada when he was 10. Evans studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design. He participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada and internationally including the Tina B. Biennial in Prague and the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan. His solo exhibition— ‘Seeing Things: The Paintings of Gary Evans’ toured across Canada. Gary Evans is now the Coordinator of the Georgian College Fine Arts program in Barrie, ON.

His paintings have been widely collected in Canada both privately and publicly including the Museum London in London, Ontario and The Art Gallery of Kelowna, BC.
