About Man with Hat
In this simple, striking oil portrait British artist Jennifer Hornyak has captured the image of a young man in profile, casually dressed in a white sun hat and a black t-shirt. Hornyak uses her signature thick layers of expressive brushwork and shapes in solid colours, outlined in black to convey the image. Known for her abstract and figurative work, Hornyak is inspired by both German Expressionism and the early 20th century French Fauvist masters such as Matisse whose style of painting used colour in non-naturalistic ways. She achieves such rich textures by applying layer upon layer of glaze."We cannot reproduce nature, nor should we want to. All we can do is see and feel and aim to transcend ourselves." Jennifer Hornyak
She studied at the Grimsby School of Art in England. In 1961, she moved to Montreal where she attended McGill University, the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal and the Centre Saidye Bronfman. Hornyak has exhibited throughout North America and Europe including the Paris World Exhibition in 1987 where her work was shown alongside that of Modigliani, Picasso and van Dongen. Hornyak’s work is represented in many private and corporate collections.
