About Boxing Match 1-4

Toronto artist Roch Smith never boxed in school and he is not a fan of its inherent violence. He has used the compelling imagery of this sport as a means of exploring male identity in western society. Known for his playful and thought-provoking sculptures, this piece—four black and white photographs of boxers in various positions culled from 1970’s boxing magazines is transferred onto wood panels.

“…in my mind they were centered on the idea of memory and hyper-masculinity but ultimately spoke to time with my father. There was some irony involved as my father did the cleaning and dusting in our house but there were always sports on in the background whether on radio or TV.” Roch Smith

He received a BFA (Honours Sculpture) from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (ECIAD - 1997) and an MFA from York University (2003). A teacher as well as an artist, he has taught classes at the University of Waterloo, ECIAD and York University. He currently manages and operates the bronze and aluminum foundry at York University. Roch Smith has exhibited throughout Canada and in the US. His work is included in private, corporate and museum collections.
