About Deep Blue

As a contemporary sculptor, Roch Smith often likes to re-imagine the ‘ordinary’ in an extraordinary way by creating thought-provoking artwork. The Canadian artist cast this contemplative bronze figure of a female sitting, legs dangling from a steel beam. Is she thinking about diving into water or is she simply thinking about the view?

“It is that moment of decision – do I stay or do I go – that intrigues me. There would appear to be no bad outcome in either case. I like the quality of quiet contentment that sitting with your legs dangling engenders.” Roch Smith

Roch Smith received a BFA (Honours Sculpture) from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (ECIAD - 1997) and an MFA from York University (2003). A teacher as well as an artist, he has taught classes at the University of Waterloo, ECIAD and York University. He currently manages and operates the bronze and aluminum foundry at York University. Roch Smith has exhibited throughout Canada and in the US. His work is included in private, corporate and museum collections.
