About Kinship
Roch Smith’s engaging contemporary sculptures are designed to be both playful and provocative. With this piece, the Canadian sculptor has hand forged in bronze, one male figure in three different sizes: each one straddling the shoulders of the other. The figures sit on a wooden bench that invites the viewer to take a seat beside them, rest and perhaps ‘share in their musings.’
“Although it is the same figure at three different scales I was actually thinking a lot about family when I was making the piece. I have two older brothers so it was always a trio coming at you from the Smiths.” Roch Smith
Roch Smith received a BFA (Honours Sculpture) from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (ECIAD - 1997) and an MFA from York University (2003). A teacher as well as an artist, he has taught classes at the University of Waterloo, ECIAD and York University. He currently manages and operates the bronze and aluminum foundry at York University. Roch Smith has exhibited throughout Canada and in the US. His work is included in private, corporate and museum collections.
