About Latte Javelin
As a mature artist, Roch Smith is still, on occasion ‘playing’ with toys. With his small bronze sculptures, the Toronto artist often cleverly uses toys to express social issues. This table-top sculpture features an ancient warrior prepared for battle, a large shield in one hand and what appears to be a stir stick in the other—a substitute for a javelin. Is Smith making a social comment on the popular ‘no foam, extra hot’ coffee culture? You bet! The toy figure sized sculpture is mounted on a block of wood painted blue..“Toys have always fascinated me – how they function and how their meanings can be ‘read’. For such simple objects toys inhabit a complex space – a space that might not be exclusive to issues of socialization..." Roch Smith
