About Peace Study Tondo with Sky Blue

In her Quebec studio, ceramic artist Paula Murray uses her own recipe for porcelain clay that she hand-shapes into beautiful and intricate pieces. Inspired by forms and patterns found in nature, Murray’s work reflects the deeply spiritual connection between humans and the natural world.
“I believe the artist’s role is to try to understand this life force (clay) by articulating it and giving it form. My intention has always been the same. I want to make objects about the nature of being in and honoring the natural world.” Paula Murray
This wall sculpture is one of a series Murray created using a thatched surface of intersecting white porcelain bridges set in a pale blue resin. When viewed as a landscape the slim bridges and their shadows suggest the idea of bridges building towards peace.

Murray has received many honours and international awards and was elected into the RCA in 2006. Her work has been gifted by the Canadian government to dignitaries such as US President George W. Bush and UN Secretary Kofi Annan. Murray’s pieces can be found in private and public collections including the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Banff Centre, the Gardiner Museum, Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Official Residence of the Prime Minister in Canada and Canada House in London England.
