About Sycamore (Berlin Series)
The New York Times described Peter Hoffer’s landscapes as ‘distinguished by mood and sweep of the motif.’ The Canadian artist has garnered international attention for his masterful paintings. This landscape is one of a series created when the artist lived in Berlin. An outline of a lone bare sycamore tree stands in the center, framed by the surrounding abstracted landscape of green bushes, water and a cloudy blue sky. Hoffer’s technique of using layer upon layer of paint, drippings and etching the surface adds remarkable depth and texture to each piece.“This random etching of the surface calls to task the sense of material ‘value’. The preciousness of the objet d'art, as well as the peripheral landscape represented, appears to be rediscovered much like an artifact. Its apparent neglect through time, neglect or abuse, is salvaged and displayed.” Peter Hoffer
