About The Pleiades-Celaeno 4/8

Canadian artist Richard Tosczak is known for his beautiful figurative sculptures. This bronze statuette of a nude female leaning as if against a wall, hands behind her back was first rendered in a quick pen and ink drawing. These initial studies of figures allow the artist to capture the emotion and spontaneity of a moment in time. A green patina highlights the texture and form.

“The figurative works of the last few years are overtly anonymous and convey an intense introspection. Even those figures, inspired by dynamic activities such as dance and contact improvisation, give the impression they are turning inward into themselves. I believe this reflects and parallels my personal experience and possibly my growth as an artist.” Richard Tosczak
Born in Belgium, Richard Tosczak studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel. Tosczak has exhibited in Canada, Brazil and in Europe. His work is held in private, public and corporate collections in Canada.
