Early in her career, Shireen Kamran’s enigmatic artwork was influenced by famed abstract artists, De Kooning and Picasso. Her chosen subject matter often pays homage to her rich Pakistani heritage. This is one in a series of elegant abstract compositions she created in memory of the forced exodus of many people from the town of Suluk, Raqqa. Graphic passages and markings in muted shades of bronze, turquoise, yellow and navy contrast with black and bright white.

“I was influenced by cubism, in fact there might be strains of cubism in my current work, I love how he used to tackle stuff. I like earthy stuff. It draws me, the organics and earthiness, the forms and shapes.” Shireen Kamran

Shireen Kamran was born in Lahore, Pakistan in 1954. She received a BSc. degree from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan and a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal. Her work is held in private collections in Canada and abroad.
