About La Bouche

It is a striking piece. Steven Heinemann’s wall mounted ceramic sculpture has a bold fluid organic form and equally bold colour—deep red. Called “La Bouche” which means mouth in French, the shape of this ceramic piece resembles a mouth, wrapped in bright white. The much-celebrated ceramicist’s work has redefined the limits of ceramic art. The artist revealed he had recently re-watched the dark film, “The Joker’ and found it quite moving. Inspiration?

“I was looking for a rethinking and placing it on the wall offered that. Once on the wall, the red space may not read as concave till viewed up close and that illusion can create a feeling of an open space (yes, including a mouth).” Steven Heinemann
