About Japan

He loved to paint people and places. Ted Harrison became one of Canada’s most popular artists known for his brightly coloured paintings that depicted the world around him. This modern landscape of a mountain, a classic Japanese pagoda, a gate, a lake, two figures in traditional dress, and two birds is rendered in vivid blues, pinks, orange, purple, yellow, white and a touch of black. It’s a charming, joyful piece.

"Life is a rainbow road, multicoloured with the most brilliant hues and contrasting with the darkest tones.” Ted Harrison

Harrison was born (1925-2015) in a small English village. He obtained a Diploma in Design from the Hartlepool College of Art in 1950. He and his family emigrated to the Yukon in the 1960’s where he painted, wrote children’s books and began a life-long career teaching. The land and the people of the Yukon became his ‘Shangri-la’. In 1987 he was awarded an Order of Canada for his contribution to Canadian culture.

In 1993 he moved to Victoria, BC to continue his painting and writing. He was inducted in the Royal Conservatory of the Arts in 2005. Harrison’s paintings are held in private and public collections throughout Canada, the U.S. ,New Zealand, Japan, and Germany.
