About Elemental Marquina No 1

Sculpted from Spanish black marble, this enigmatic and powerful piece was created by Viktor Mitic. The Canadian artist has received international attention for his distinctive artwork known for its imaginative form and colour. This sculpture is a stacked assemblage of abstract forms inspired by photos and sketches he made of paint splattering on his studio floor. Mitic named this outdoor sculpture after the beautifully veined marble which is quarried from the regions of northern Spain in Markina, Basque Country.

“My goal with these is to showcase the universal human connection we are all a part of, and if I can make a statement while doing so, even better.” Viktor Mitic

Viktor Mitic was born in Serbia, emigrated to Canada and earned a BFA from the University of Toronto in 1995 with studies in art history at Sheridan College. He has exhibited his post-Pop inspired paintings, prints and colourful abstract sculptures at numerous international venues, notable among them Muramatsu Gallery in Tokyo, The Armory Show in NYC, Art Chicago and Toronto.
